40 Bags in 40 Days Lent 2012

Tomorrow is the first day of Lent.
Every year since high school, I have "given up" the same thing for Lent.
I have given up all dessert, candy & sweets.
If you know me, you know how much I LOVE my desserts.
But, this year, I am not doing this for lent. It has become "too easy"
I have done it for over 15 years & I feel like it is time for a change.
I needed a challenge & something for me to re-focus on during Lent.

So, starting tomorrow, I will be doing a 40 Bags in 40 Days Challenge.
I read about this on a blog (can't remember which one) a couple years ago & knew that I wanted to do it for Lent one year. Well, this is that year. No more procrastinating.

The idea is that during Lent (40 days) rid your house of 40 bags of "stuff".
This "stuff" can be things you don't use... junk, clothes you don't need/wear, clutter, old toys, etc.

Why have I decided to do this?
A few reasons...
If you look at my house, it is very clutter free....that is until you look in the closets & drawers.
They are SO unorganized & full junk. Seriously, it is scary what my closets & drawers look like.
It reminds me of how we all appear sometimes. Good on the outside & messy on the inside.

To me, Lent is a time of prayer, self-reflection, sacrifice, self-control and renewal.
To me, a good home de-cluttering can go hand in hand with the Lenten season, just like our houses/blogs may look put together on the outside, on the inside we are a mess and need an intervention & de-cluttering ourselves.

Our house is decently sized, but our storage is limited, it is time to
GET RID OF STUFF.
It is kind of gross how much STUFF we have, that we don't even need.
The amount of clothes I have, but haven't worn in months/years is embarrassing.
They need to be given away to people who need clothes.
We have more than we need..it's time to SIMPLIFY.

It sounds overwhelming to get rid of 40 bags of stuff, but I know how much I need to do this.
Over the weekend, Kevin & I did some re-organizing of our garage. We found 1 box that we never unpacked (from when we moved 20 months ago!)
In that final box that was never unpacked, it contained items from our "junk drawer" in our old kitchen...there was a $30 Target card, $25 Target Card, $15 ITunes Card, $20 Peets coffee card, $25 Pottery Barn Kids Gift card and $25 in movie dollars..among other treasures. And, we found things that were still wrapped up in newspaper from our 2004 move to that house! It has been boxed up for 8 years & I haven't missed it. GROSS!
This is one of the reasons that motivated me to want to do 40 bags in 40 days....I know I have stuff in drawers/closets that need to find a new spot in my house (or at the Good Will).

I wrote down a list of 30 areas that I wanted to clean out & organize.
Even though Lent is 40 days, I know some of these areas will take me longer than 1 day.
I also know that some of these areas (like my clothes) will be more than 1 bag.
I figured I will do 30 areas & that will also give me some "spare" days if I don't have time one day to clean out an area.
I can't wait to SIMPLIFY our stuff over the next 40 days.
It is going to be a cleansing of sorts & I dreading this task, yet excited about it at the same time.

I know how much better I feel inside (& out) when my house is organized.
Life feels less chaotic.

I would LOVE it if you joined in...Let me know if you need to GET RID OF STUFF.
We can do this together!

This blog will help me stay accountable & I plan on doing photo updates over the next 7 weeks as I CLEAN OUT CRAP that I don't need. I will try and do some before/after pictures on some of the areas.
LESS IS MORE.
"LESS of me & my stuff and MORE of JESUS"
This shall be my mantra this Lenton Season.

He loves to read

This week I'm kicking off a "Reading Series"
-how to help your child love to read
-how to read to your child
-awesome books for toddlers and babies
-and whatever else I think of.

Tune in each day to see more tips about reading with toddlers and babies!

My 2yr old has always loved books. Even before he could walk, he'd crawl over to his bookcase and look at the picture books. (Luckily, he inherited tons of picture books from older cousins.) Now that Simon is talking, he wants to "read" to us. He has a great memory, so he learns a book quickly. It's such a proud moment watching him "read" back to us. He even copies our voice inflections, so cute!

The book in the video is "Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear." My husband pulled out the book from the top of his closet one night, and Simon asked us to read it as his bedtime story for a couple weeks in a row. After that he had it memorized. This book is based off the story "the Little Mouse, Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear" which is the first book Simon learned to "read."

1. Reading to your kids everyday is an easy way to encourage them to love reading. You can read at bedtime, take books in the car, or take books to church.

2. Read a variety of books. Since we were given 95% of our books from older cousins, we have books about sports, princesses, different languages, and animals. We read books about Barbie, Sesame Street, the University of Texas, Little Critter, and the Magic School Bus. As babies, my kids loved the texture books with furry dogs and feathery ducks.

3. Shake things up occasionally. Instead of reading the words point out the colors, the numbers, the shapes, or the emotions of the characters. Your kids will soak up everything like a sponge.

10 weeks Baby 4 Hidden Baby Chronicles

12/11/16 | 10w1d

I guess I should start doing 'real' weekly updates now?

Big things from this past week: at 9w3d I pulled the Doppler from the attic, and within about 5 minutes of trying I heard the beautiful sound of baby's heartbeat. It was a quick 178 bpm, loud and strong, and provided me with lots of relief that I didn't know I needed. I think the time from seeing a heartbeat on the ultrasound until I can feel movement is a little strange/hard to stay positive. I mean, I am feeling pregnant and looking it, too. But until I can feel this baby move (usually around 14 weeks) it is easy to wonder what is going on in there. So anyway, doppler for the win, yet again.

Also, I think my bump is getting out of control. I mean, comparing my midsection to what it looked like just six weeks ago is sort of startling. I realize it will also be startling to think *this* was a 'bump' when I'm sporting a 40 week bump. But still! I'm starting to wonder if I can actually keep this a secret from the kids and work and many of our friends until 12 weeks or beyond. This uterus is like, 'OH YEAH, I KNOW WHAT TO DO, SIT BACK AND WATCH.' It talks to me like that, I swear.

All Photos-122

A few days ago, we had our annual neighborhood Christmas crawl, where we go house to house and party. I didn't even bother to fake drink and made a questionable decision to wear a semi-fitted sweater dress instead of something super flowy. My father-in-law walked into our house, ready to watch the kids that night, and said, 'WOAH, you are really showing now!' So that's great. I still didn't change my clothes because I was having a wardrobe crisis and actually felt somewhat cute in the dress. Then at the party, one guy asked Nate if I was pregnant (and he said yes), and one girl straight up asked me and I LIED and said 'no!'. I'm not sure why I lied, but I don't know her that well and didn't feel like dealing. I'm positive a lot of our closer friends suspect because I was drinking water and apparently because of my obvious bump. A lot of our friends and neighbors already know, but several do not---I'm sure they won't be that surprised when word finally spreads.

I've been feeling a little better this week. I will have a great day when I don't even need a nap and don't want to vom at the thought of a vegetable. But the next day will be more of the same nasty stuff when I can't help but pass out midday for 2 hours, I feel sick basically constantly, and food makes me want to hurl but I'm starving. At least that isn't every single day anymore? Oh, and another thing worth mentioning: my boobs are officially getting bigger. Yessssssss, one big positive about pregnancy is that I get to pretend I'm not an A-cup underneath the weight gain and milk production!

I don't know how much I'll go into it on the blog, but tomorrow I'm going in for an interview at my job to be considered for a promotion. I'm not too nervous, mostly excited, and interested to see where this goes. I don't plan on telling them that I'm pregnant until after the interviews and what not, which I hope isn't deceitful....but I don't want it to make a difference in their or my decision. However, I'm realizing that if things aren't settled in the job front by 12 weeks, that will put a damper on my idea to tell the kids and maybe the internet. Because I definitely don't want my job finding out through the grapevine that I'll be going on maternity leave for 3 months next year. I assume that I'll be coming back to work after baby but who knows, it all depends on Nate's small business venture and how well he's doing....and whether or not we start with the house addition before or during my maternity leave. So yeah, a LOT of big things happening in 2017 for us. Nate's job, possibly mine, a new baby, a house addition. It's completely insane to me when I think that really none of these things, except for Nate's job change, were even on the agenda two months ago. This baby is going to be a catalyst for change in our family, and we couldn't be more excited/ready to get the show on the road!

Earlier this week, I was talking to a friend who knows I'm pregnant and said something about having four kids. Right then and there it hit me like a ton of bricks, maybe for the first time since October when we found out I'm expecting. Four kids. I can type it all I want, and say it to myself or to Nate, but I know it hasn't really hit me yet. That day with my friend, it hit me and kind of made my head spin.

We are going to have four children. There's someone else growing in my belly, someone that is going to complete our family, make Porter a big brother (laughable), provide many more stories and laughter and personality in this family. I've said it before and I'll say it again: we are so stinking blessed it's almost hard to accept.

Double digits, baby!

Happy FOURTH Birthday Truman!

To the boy that made me a mother four years ago:

I love you so much, buddy!! Can't remember a time without you and wouldn't want to, really. I vividly remember the day you were born (for many reasons) and it seems strange that it was ONLY four years ago. You are the best. You keep us on our toes. We love watching you grow up and can't wait to see what's in store for us with this next year of your life.

I will do an official 'what you are up to' post soon. But for today, on your actual birthday (and the day of your party!), I just wanted to say that I LOVE YOU.

Here is your slideshow I made from the past year of 'real' pictures. I wasn't sure I had taken enough of you to do one this year but sure enough, it's 5 minutes long.

And here is your four year old interview. It was a bit of a fiasco to get you to focus for this many questions (NINE!) and we did have to start and stop one time when you were randomly touching your sister's face in a menacing way. Oh, my Truman. You are one of a kind.

Love you, big man!

The Happiest Place on Earth Part 1

If you are visiting from Kelly's Korner, welcome!
We just got back from 3 days at Disneyland/California Adventure!
Disneyland is one of my favorite places to go and with kids, it is even more magical!

Last Friday, we headed down to Southern California to attend the wedding of one of our former youth group kids. The wedding was on a Friday afternoon, so Kevin and I thought it would be fun if we took the kids with us and then surprise them on Saturday morning by taking them to Disneyland for the weekend. Even though we live in California, we have never taken them to Disneyland.
(We did go on a Disney Cruise & DisneyWorld during the summer of 2011. You can read about it Here, Here & Here)
We left Friday morning to head down south. Highway 5 is looooong and boring.
Luckily, I had Starbucks. And, curlers in my hair. You see, our hotel was at Disneyland, so we were going straight to the wedding without going to the hotel.
Gotta love no make up & wearing curlers in your hair for a 6 hour car ride.
And, I graded 160 math tests (since I was playing hooky from school, I needed to get work done!)
When we got into town, we stopped at Coffee Bean (my favorite) and changed clothes in their bathroom. Are we classy or what?
At the wedding. Make up on & no more curlers.
The happy couple.
While we were at the wedding, my mother in law took the girls to Chuck E Cheese in the same town the reception was in. We invited my mother in law to come with us so she could watch the girls during the reception and then come to Disneyland with us.
After the wedding, we drove to Disneyland & checked into our hotel after 11pm.
I was so excited about the big surprise in the morning!
The next morning we asked them "If you could do anything today, what would you want to do?"  Claire says, "Go to Disneyland"
And, then we said, "Perfect, because we are AT DISNEYLAND!"
I had shirts for all of them to wear. Here is Luke in his:
{Shirts from Here}

We ate breakfast at the hotel & walked across the street to Disneyland!
Don't forget your 1st time buttons from Customer Relations!

It was a beautiful 85 degree day! We totally lucked out with the weather.
Main St. Disneyland.
Hi, Walt & Mickey!
Glad I remembered to bring their mouse ears. Kate asked for them as soon as we said where we were going.
First ride, the Carrousel.
When we went on the Disney Cruise, Kate could care less about the characters. She was all about them on this trip.
Train Ride
Teacups!
 Toon Town:
Luke's first pair of ears!
Small World. Luke LOVED this ride. Stimulation Overload.
Autotopia:
Parade Time! We got awesome seats because we were having an ice cream break about 30 minutes before the parade started.

Our kids were SPENT by dinner time. It was a full, fun day.

Tips from the first day:
  • We had no agenda. Since we were going to be there for 3 days, we took it easy the first day.
  • No real plan. If there was a ride that the girls wanted to go on, my mother in law got fast passes for all of us while we stood in line for another line.
  • We brought in our own lunch (to save $) and made sure we had lots of snacks to avoid meltdowns.
  • Since it was so warm out we made sure we did an inside ride, then an outside ride. (Inside rides we love Winnie the Pooh, Small World, Nemo Submarine, Buzz Light Year, Pirates of the Caribbean, Roger Rabbit. Luke was able to go on all these rides also!)
  •  We brought our Double Bob stroller. Luke & Claire sat in the seats and Kate sat on the big foot rest of the Bob. Worked perfectly.
We headed back to the hotel to give them dinner & put them to bed.
Then, my mother in law stayed in the hotel with the kids & then Kevin and I had a date night!
Woot Woot!
First thing on our agenda was to head to California Adventure & go on Tower of Terror:

The last time Kevin and I went to Disneyland was 11 years ago (we took my younger sister Becks for her 18th birthday). California Adventure had just opened up the year before, but we didn't go. So, this was our first time going. That night we didn't explore the park, we just went on Tower of Terror.

Have you been on that ride? OH MY GOSH. SO fun. So Scary. Love it.

This ride is like an elevator that drops you several floors, a very quickly & multiple times.
The first drop, I grabbed Kevin's leg AND the leg of the random girl next to me. That was embarrassing.
Then we ran over to Disneyland to go on rides there. The fireworks show was going on, which is gorgeous. But that means....less people in lines for the fun rides! Woot Woot!

Sleeping Beauty's Castle lit up at night:

Walt & Mickey at night:

We went on some of our favorite rides, Indiana Jones, Matterhorn and my favorite...

Check out the hidden Mikey face in the seats of Space Mountain:

It was so fun running around the park at night like a bunch of kids (without our kids!)
We got back to the hotel around midnight and went to sleep for a few hours.
We would be waking up early the next morning to go to California Adventure, we couldn't wait to check out the new Cars Land!
