April 6 Easter recap

Easter snuck up on us this year and everything we did felt pretty 'last minute.' But even so, the kids had a ball and obtained a ridiculous amount of candy. Therefore, it's a win!

Dyeing of eggs: this happened last week and I will admit, it's not my favorite activity in the world. Can be so messy and chaotic with the big kids doing their thing while Porter wants to chip in and 'help.' Of course, it's really very pretty when I stop worrying about spillage and stains.

Kind of like a science experiment, watching the tablets fizz.

Truman had a traditional 'dunk 'em' kit and CC had a strange marble style kit, that you have to squeeze liquid dye into a plastic bag and rub the egg inside. And Hi, Porter!

They were so proud of their results and we should have gone for two dozen. Also, please note the yellow guy in the upper left. I accidentally squeezed it to death when I was trying to pick it up. Apparently I don't know my own strength and luckily CC wasn't too upset with me since it was one of her six.

Saturday morning, egg hunt at school: I did a Day in the Life this day, so more to come. But it was a chilly/sunny day and our third year doing the hunt at Truman's school. Very fun and very quick! Totally finished within 20 minutes MAX, no time to waste for us to go home and sort our loot.

Quite possibly the creepiest Easter Bunny in the history of time. She was very kind but her nose squeaked when she pushed it and CC was fairly terrified initially. Those eyebrows and teeth! Also, note the fact she is sort of sneaking up on Truman here. (I say 'she' because the gender of the Easter Bunny was a gigantic topic of debate in our house.

Sunday morning, pre-church: this was kind of hilarious, because Nate and I totally threw this all together last minute. Meaning, I pulled out the old baskets, grass, and eggs and filled them with jelly beans and malt eggs only. Then I felt remorse for not making a Target Dollar Spot trip, and for not doing any chocolate or 'fun' candy outside of the eggs. Nate promised it was not a big deal at all so I didn't go to Target. But then Nate went to Walgreens at nearly midnight the night before with a friend who was watching the basketball game with him, since that dad needed plastic eggs. Nate grabbed some chocolate stuff, PEZ, and other little things to put inside. Plus, although Nate had said it's not worth it to wrap the 'big gifts', he felt like it wouldn't be right unless they were wrapped. So he found our Christmas paper at midnight when I was already passed out asleep and wrapped the gifts himself: Cecelia got a hot pink soccer ball for her little spring league coming up, and Truman got two new Skylander guys. Nate even hid the eggs before he came to bed again, after he had said it would be fine to just have a basket out for the kids. Glad it all worked out and that Nate totally picked up my slack on this event;)

Post-church, at the in-laws: Tony stayed home with a napping Porter while Nate, myself, Lois and the two big kids went to church. They both did really, really well for a long service like that....especially knowing that another egg hunt was awaiting them. We went to the in-laws after church and ate brunch after the kids got their baskets from Lois.

I forced the family to take a picture together since we were all dressed up nicely. Ah, this crew of mine makes me smile. Nate's giant foot, Truman cupping Porter's foot, Cecelia's forced smile....good stuff.

Brunch was fantastic: Tony's egg strata, fruit, Lois' potatoes, and poppy seed bread with frosting. This is a pastry that I hadn't heard of before meeting Nate's family. It's freaking phenomenal...all of it was.
IMG_4480

Then Lois hid some eggs outside and the kids searched for them. It was pretty cold and windy and overcast so they made short work of this part!

Also, Porter wore Tony's Marquette hat and then I died from cuteness.

Really good weekend over here! Sort of exhausting but in a great way. I think next year I should attempt to find official Easter outfits for the children instead of just scrambling the morning of church, to find items that would fit/work well enough. Pretty sure both Truman and Cecelia wore the exact same outfits to Porter's baptism but I don't think God cares too much about that. Also, I should actually think about the whole basket/egg hunt thing more than one night in advance. But actually I don't think the kids care much anyway as long as there's candy involved. No worries there, children!

Easter Its not about the Bunny

Easter isn't about the Egg Hunts, Dyeing Eggs, the Candy or the Chocolate.
It's definitley not about the Easter Bunny, even though I take my kids to see him each year & you know I love me a good crying kid with the Easter Bunny picture.
(Luke is not too sure.....anyone want to make a wager that he cries next year?)

Even though we have fun doing these little things during Easter, the real reason we celebrate Easter is because of Jesus.
Jesus, who died on the cross to forgive me and you from our sins.
All of our sins. Past, present and future.
Why? Because he love us. No matter what.
He came to save us from ourselves & paid the ultimate sacrifice for us.
Dying on the cross & rising again 3 days later.
Giving HIS life so we can have life in him.
And we celebrate today because the tomb was empty, HE is Risen!

"He is not here; he has risen, just as he said."
Matthew 28:6

Today, I am thankful for the cross, thankful the tomb was empty and thankful for all HE has done for us.
Jesus loves YOU. Yes, YOU.
Happy Easter!

Our Easter Weekend

I am finally getting around to doing our Easter recap!
Late Saturday night when the girls were in bed, I put out some Bunny Tracks with flour.
Imagine my surprise when we woke up on Sunday morning & it was raining!
There was NO rain in the forecast!
Needless to say, my flour "bunny tracks" that were not covered by our porch turned into a flour-y sludge and it won't scrape off.
Kevin needs to powerwash our front walkway now. Oops!

The girls didn't discover the Bunny tracks until AFTER we got home from church.
Our Easter Bunny comes after we get home from church (while Kevin loads the girls into the car to go to church, I run back inside & put out their Easter Baskets. Sneaky, sneaky)
The girls were thrilled that the Easter Bunny left bunny prints.
But, Kate wanted to know why the Easter Bunny has flour paw prints.
She is smarter than I give her credit for... (and she helps me bake a lot, so I guess she recognized the flour...who knows!)
I loved their reaction when they saw their Baskets filled up:
Here is their loot:
Every year, in their basket, I give them things that I would normally buy them anyways:
(a book, stickers, chalk, a new swimsuit, a new sun dress & a pair of sandals)
And, of course....the best Easter candy ever: Reeces Peanut Butter Eggs!
This year they also got a new swim towel & a personalized placemat.
Hooray! A picture of both of them smiling! It's an Easter Miracle!
Oh yeah, and notice how my girls are wearing short sleeved sun dresses.
It was NOT a warm day. I had no idea it was going to rain & didn't have sweaters for them.
I figured since Easter was so late this year that the weather would be warm. WRONG!

Right after our mini indoor egg hunt, we loaded up the car & headed out to Kevin's sister and brother in law's house. They host a huge Easter party every year, but we only go every other year (we rotate with my family)
They have a winery & live on 10 acres of grapes...this is part of their backyard:
Lots of grapes = wine! We got to sample my brother in law's 2011 releases:
Jeff, Mike & Kevin:
It was a great weekend spending time with family celebrating Easter & all that Christ has done for us!

And, just a reminder....the Cupcake Carnival starts this Sunday, May 1st!

Easter Egg Garland DIY

Our house is ready for Easter!  We have bits of decor here and there.  A new decoration is the Easter Egg Garland!

One of my favorite DIY's I have done is my Christmas Ornament Garland and I wanted to do a cute Easter egg one!  Last year I attempted to make an egg wreath, but all of the eggs fell off of the Styrofoam form so that idea was scrapped.

These are super easy to make, but a little more tedious than the Christmas one because the holes are so small, and each end of eggs have two holes, so it is double the threading.  But worth it!

Start off by collecting eggs (I had 60 but ended up using a couple less than that).  If you want the garland to go in a specific color order (I did) organize them by color for easy threading!  I opened them as I organized so I could quickly get them threaded as well.

Next, take two long pieces of thread/string and lace through one of the egg holes, on each end of the egg.  Then do the same for the other set of holes on the egg.  I used a needle, but if your thread is thin enough you might not need to.  I also wished I had used fishing line or something a little stronger than thread - so keep that in mind!

Close the egg after both sides are threaded, then continue to the next!  Again, if you use thread like I did, beware the tangles!  I had to keep my eggs nice and close together to avoid tangles.  Continue until you are out of eggs and knot at the other end!

Hooray!!  Someday I want to swag the garland, but right now we need it out of toddler reach.  So it is snaked along our mantle.  Still adds a pop of color which I love.

I added a few other touches to the mantle.  Obsessed with this little gnome.

Little eggs on sticks in a vase (took pic for Instagram before the garland was complete).

More eggs in a vase, this time with some grass.

These little chicks also had to be out of toddler reach.

The sideboard has Easter items that are ok for Bradley to grab.

Clearly he likes grabbing - he carries these around like purses! :)

Not totally Easter decor, but I found a cute cake stand for my marshmallow mugs in the Easter stuff at Target!  Love love love!

And added a little flair at work. :)

Are you all decorated for Easter?

Empty Tomb Easter Cookies

I posted this last year, but I am posting it again so that you can do this with your kids sometime this week! I will be making these again with the girls on Saturday!

Empty Tomb Easter Cookies
(also called Resurrection Cookies)

Here is what you need:
1 Cup of Pecans
1 Cup of Sugar
1 tsp. Vinegar
3 Egg Whites
Zipper Bag
Wooden spoon
Wax Paper
Pinch of Salt
Tape
Bible
Directions:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Place pecans in zipper bag and beat them with the wooden spoon to break them into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested that He was beaten by the Roman Soldiers.
Read John 19: 1-3 and smell the vinegar.
Put 1 tsp. Vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink.
Kate asked me where all the pictures are in my Bible. haha!
Read John 19: 28-30. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life.
Read John 10: 10-11. Sprinkle a little salt, taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin.
Read Luke 23: 27. Add 1 cup of sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is the Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him.
Read Psalm 34: 8 and John 3: 16. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.
12-15 minutes is a long time for a 3 year old to wait...Kate had fun with the tape while we were waiting.
After the 12-15 minutes, your mixture should look like this:
Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.
Read Isaiah 1: 18 and John 3:1-3. Fold broken nuts into mixture.
Stir:
(Don't let your kid taste the mixture...raw eggs! Oops!)
Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus body laid.
Read Matthew 27: 57-60. Put cookie sheet in the oven:
Close the door and turn the oven off. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain the Jesus’ tomb was sealed.
Read Matthew 27: 65-66. Go to Bed!! Explain that we may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight just as Jesus followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed.
Read John 16: 20 and 22.
On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie.
Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow!!! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.
Read Matthew 28: 1-9. Christ has risen, hallelujah!
May you have a great Holy Week reflecting on Easter and all that Christ has done for you!
This is the week that changed the world!

{Linking up with Heather!}
